One of the most difficult decisions for an adult caregiver or their family is the placement of a loved one in a nursing facility or moving a parent from the family home to a different long term care setting such as an assisted living facility (ALF), a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) or a congregate senior housing community.

In additional to the obvious emotional toll, families are suddenly confronted with the prospect of spending literally thousands of dollars each month for their loved one’s care. For example, in 2002, the average monthly cost of nursing home care in Massachusetts was over $7,000 per month. The average cost for assisted living was approximately $4,000 per month.

Adding to the dilemma is the uncertainty of the quality of care and services in the facilities or communities that are under consideration. We’re reminded all too often by television reports and newspaper articles about stories of substandard care, especially in nursing home settings.

One of our specialty services is professional consultation and assistance with long term care assessments and placements.

Working with clients to ensure that their parent or loved one is placed in a high quality facility or community is the very fabric of what we do. We don’t just give clients the names of nursing homes or assisted living communities, we provide clients with a report detailing quality of care in each nursing facility or ALF community. Using our nursing home or ALF assessment tool, we will identify several providers who offer services that meet your parent or loved one’s particular needs. You will receive a report on each facility or community and a list of questions to take with you when you visit. If you choose, we will be pleased to conduct the initial visits and provide you with a ranked order recommendation based on objective data and our best professional judgment. We coordinate all of the arrangements necessary to have your parent or relative admitted to the facility of your choice. Follow-up services are provided at the specific request of the client.

We act as professional advisors to our clients within any phase of the long term care placement process. Some examples of our work with recent clients include comprehensive quality of care assessments involving telephone or personal interviews with the Administrator and Director of Nursing, active interventions with nursing homes to accept challenging cases, detailed analysis of recent Survey reports and discussion around citations and deficiencies, assistance with interpreting data and information on the State and Medicare web sites and general consultation.

Experience and knowledge is knowing how the system works and how to objectively evaluate quality of care…we are experts in this field. In our experience, quality of care is a "moving target". Due to federal budget cuts with Medicare and Medicaid, nursing shortages, union issues, high turnover of key staff and bankruptcy of some of the country’s largest nursing home chains, it’s not uncommon for facilities with a long history of high quality care and an excellent reputation in their respective communities to move from the "A" list to the "C" or "D" list in a short period of time or visa versa. For that reason, we believe that families faced with the prospect of a long term care placement should seek professional advice.
